Hi there,

My name is Pam ---- and my husband and I just went climbing with your guide Steve this past Saturday. I just wanted to let you know what an enjoyable time we had. We felt that we were in very capable hands. This was the first time I had climbed outside the gym and the first time my husband has EVER climbed. My husband was very nervous and afraid of heights but Steve made him feel comfortable enough and gave him so much encouragement that my husband made it to the top of the cinnamon slab! My husband now wants to try and join me at the gym. We are certainly planning on coming back to Smith Rock State Park and hopefully will be bringing friends. We will also most definitely be contacting you all again. It was well worth the cost for the wonderful experience and feeling of safety that Steve provided us. Hey David,

This is Nic from Monterey CA. How are you doing?  Just wanted to follow up and say how much fun I had climbing with you the other week. It was the cherry on top of my little vacation up to Oregon. I actually meant to write to you much sooner, but I've been very active since I came back home, working and doing alot of climbing! I did this multipitch ascent up one of the larger formations at Pinnacles called Machete ridge. Six pitches of nasty choss, 30 ft runouts above trad gear, and a couple 12a sections thrown in for good measure. Definitely gained some testicular fortitude after that one. Also just got back from a nice but lesser known sport crag in Sonora, near Yosemite.  Why am I telling you all this? Because the skills I absorbed from climbing with you were put to use in each of these situations and made them that much more efficient/safe/fun. I also just wanted to brag about how much fun I've been having.  Anyway, it would be rad to climb with you again!

Suzie and I were re-hashing our climbing day when we saw each other at work today and, of course, started giggling. We all had such a great time! Hopefully we weren't too obnoxious! We did end up going to Papandrea's in Sisters, very good for post-climbing thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely be spreading the word about Smith Rock Climbing Guides!

To the owner of Smith Rock Climbing Guides: 

I just wanted to file a "trip report" for my half-day guided climb on Monday, 23 June with your guide Dave McRae.  Fist of all, let me say that the experience totally exceeded my expectations for a fun and rewarding day at Smith Rock.

As a 54 year old out of shape, occasional gym climbing gumby I was more than a little apprehensive about taking on this famous and spectacular site for my first serious "real rock" experience.  Nonetheless I was totally stoked to get a chance to climb at such an amazing place and Dave did a marvelous job of making the day fun, informative, and safe.   He quickly assessed my skill level and was able to suggest climbs that were challenging but achievable.  He took me to some magnificent places in the park I would never have gotten to on my own.  He was also knowledgeable about the geology and the history of the area.  I really enjoy that sort of background information because it makes the place real rather than just a pile o'rocks to climb.

Dave was meticulous about safety and continually worked to minimize subjective risks without being fanatical about it.  I always felt very safe under his care but not coddled or overprotected.  He was also willing to do ad-hoc training when I had some questions about transitions and rope management technique.  Dave is a skillful trainer and was very efficient at transferring knowledge on the fly.  All in all, Dave's "people skills" combined with his obvious skill and love of climbing and his knowledge of the area made him a great companion and a wonderful guide on this adventure. 

I would not hesitate to recommend Smith Rock Climbing Guides in general, and Dave McRae in particular to anyone who wanted to climb at Smith Rock.  Thanks for showing me a great time and giving me a memory I will treasure.
