Featured route: Moscow (5.6)
The Red Wall contains some of the best rock at Smith, as well as several multi-pitch classics ranging from 5.6 to 5.12 in difficulty. Our recommended route is Moscow (5.6), a satisfying climb that follows large natural features up a beautiful 300 foot wall. The route has an alpine feel, with exposed belay stances relying on traditional gear for anchors, and an interesting 4th class top-out. The wide range of features, including slabs, stemming corners, and even a few wide cracks, makes you forget you are at a sport climbing area. For these reasons, it is a perfect training route for those interested in breaking into alpine or backcountry climbing, where bolts are at a minimum. You may even get a fly-by from one of Smith Rocks’ Golden Eagles, which nest on the neighboring Monument formation.
